The horrors of Microsoft or how to force an install of Microsoft Office 2008 from command line

Ahhh, I was so happy when I got my Macbook Pro and finally switched
to mac(which is up to now the perfect combination for me at least between flexibility and advanced commands aka. unix style with all it's hardcore commands and ease of use aka. windows style). I must say Mac OS X takes a little to get used with it but
it's waay better than Windows.

Still... I need Microsoft Word 2008 on my newly upgraded Snow Leopard. No wonder that I had problems when installing it because the guys at Microsoft, even though made the package Intel-based only, they made the installation PPC binary, and that means Rosetta(which I have installed already) kicks in and does it's job.(check here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=775727).

The only thing is that the installation doesn't work properly and after some more searching on the net, and studying the mpkg format I found out that I have to force somehow the installation.

After searching Google for "how to run mpkg from command line" I found this link:
http://www.commandlinefu.com/commands/view/2031/install-an-mpkg-from-the-command-line-on-osx
which tells me I should run this command:
sudo installer -pkg /Volumes/someapp/someapp.mpkg -target /

so I become root with:
sudo su -
then go to the place where the dmg file is mounted, which in my case is:
/Volumes/Microsoft Office 2008
and I find this directory
Office Installer.mpkg

Then I run the following command:
installer -pkg Office\ Installer.mpkg -target /

note the escaped spaces, an alternative would be like this
installer -pkg "Office Installer.mpkg" -target /

The installer starts without asking me anything and after a while(5 mins)
it finishes without any error and when I check the Applications directory,
the directory "Microsoft Office 2008" is present and all the applications
are nicely installed.

Here's the output of the installer program:
installer -pkg Office\ Installer.mpkg -target /
2009-09-14 17:55:12.064 installer[856:3007] PackageKit: *** Missing bundle identifier: /Library/Receipts/PPD_Installer_RICOH.pkg
2009-09-14 17:55:12.257 installer[856:3007] PackageKit: *** Missing bundle identifier: /Library/Receipts/QuickTime Component for Everio.pkg
installer: Package name is Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac
installer: Installing at base path /
2009-09-14 17:55:16.018 installer[856:4c07] Package /Volumes/Microsoft Office 2008/Office Installer.mpkg/Contents/Packages/Office2008_en_word.pkg uses a deprecated pre-10.2 format (or uses a newer format but is invalid).
2009-09-14 17:55:16.538 installer[856:4c07] PackageKit: *** Missing bundle identifier: /Library/Receipts/PPD_Installer_RICOH.pkg
2009-09-14 17:55:16.540 installer[856:4c07] PackageKit: *** Missing bundle identifier: /Library/Receipts/QuickTime Component for Everio.pkg
installer: The install was successful.

After all this hassle I realized that I just lost at least half an hour but
I installed Microsoft Office from the command line. Take that Bill!

Cell phone radiation levels

Just found this nice site that shows cell phone radiation levels and found out
about my mighty iPhone that it's not bad at all. Actually every model Apple
made is well beyond the 1.5W/kg limit or 2.0W/kg limit in Europe.

Check it out here:

Apple Keyboards Keylogged?

Wow now I must say that some hackers really are bored or just very very good and inventive. I mean who in the world could think that one can insert a keylogger inside a keyboard?! Yes, you heard it right, it is possible to insert code in the chip of a keyboard and save all the keys one presses at the computer.

Free Wireless everywhere

Have you ever been in an airport and wanted to go on the internet just to find out that there are no free wireless networks available? Or you've been in a restaurant that has a wireless but when you ask for the password they say it's only for their pda's?

Well if your network allows icmp packets to go through(ping echo request/response) then you're in luck! All you need is a previously setup linux machine somewhere on the internet and a program called ICMPTX on your laptop, with either linux or windows.

On that page you'll find links to other various methods of wireless firewall piercing, so it's a nice read if you're interested in the subject.

Good luck, and happy free browsing :)

The new iPhone 3G S

The new iPhone just launched, much sooner than I was expecting but not too soon anyway hehe and it looks great! Movies recording, copy/paste, compass, wow! Of course these are cool now until you get to work with them and really see how they are actually functioning but still they seem very promising and what's the best is the longer promised battery life and the faster processor which makes everything very smooth.

Check it out at the official apple page

Can't hardly wait :D

Long live TIFF!

RDFa technology

Following a blog entry on sitepoint about google supporting RDFa technology lately I became curious and read more about it and found some pretty impressive stuff about it.

If people start using this standard of labeling the information in the webpages, pretty soon we'll have a much more organized internet database to browse, search and sort.

One very good explanation about what RDFa is and how it does what it does can be found at the following official address:
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml-rdfa-primer/
and also if you're a html coder then your best link is this:
http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/2009/rdfa-for-html-authors

Already google is integrating some of this data labeling into it's search results and supposedly the sites that use RDFa according to google's help on RDFa tagging will benefit from a different display in the search results google. Will google guys also modify the positioning algorithms according to this data? Probably... But not yet... the internet needs to adopt and implement the RDFa technology first and then it will be logical to use this data for it's results. If google would do it sooner, lots of people would profit from this in various black hat methods.

Anyway, read about RDFa and embrace this technology for the future of internet as a large database.

Revolution in Moldavia!

For who is not on twitter and who didn't open the tv already, a revolution started in Moldavia as it seems because the communist party won the last elections with over 50%.

Our thoughts go to our friends in Moldavia, specifically the BEST people from LBG Chisinau. Please guys, be careful.

This may very well be the first revolution in the history of mankind that is broadcasted on the internet. People in the revolution are sending twitter messages with updates. Some good links are as follows:
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,4158529,00.html?maca=rum-rss-rom-all-1493-rdf

Also if you want to see all messages on twitter about this check the following link:
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23pman

An unconfirmed rumor is that one small girl died already caught in the movement of the masses, a friend says that the police did it.

Also another rumor at this moment is that police started fire against the protestants. For romanian readers check this:
http://garda.com.md/

Check also some pictures from the scene with protestants vandalizing the parliament:

Also check this blog entry, seems to be very updated:

The credit crisis explained in visual

Hey!

This is a very clear and valuable explanation of how everything began and why is it such a big mess everywhere. I learned lots of stuff from this movie, maybe you will too. Congratulations to Jonathan Jarvis for making up this very clear animation to explain to everyone where we're at. Check his site here.

Gigi Becali and his sheeps 50 Cent style

Wow this is so cool and so sick in the same time, I didn't know what to do to laugh or to cry of how much stupidity there is in our beloved country, Romania. Indeed the song is pretty nice and the lyrics are nice aswell and quite funny but this collage is something someone wasted time in doing and he/she/them expects that other people like it. And you know what? They will probably love it! Romania look out, a new viral is coming.

Si manati maaaaaaaaiiiiii!!!

Why iPhone rules again, and again, and again, and...

Again via Ed Dale I found a very cool video(okay, the song is horrible and the sync between them and the negative is also bad) which makes me be more proud of having an iPhone. Truly this is a magnificent piece of technology and who says it sucks should think that 100 years ago we didn't even have phones and now we can watch something very creative and cool in the confort of our homes or while drinking a coffee in an airport on our own iPhone. I hope I made sense :p

Anyway, enjoy ;)

Guitar mashup from youtube

Wow guys this is incredible, how someone with brilliant ingenuity and feel of music can create something new from amateur music movies from youtube. I got this from Ed Dale, who is a guitar fanatic(if I may say so), and it just blew my mind! Check this out :)

JobShop 2009

The guys from BEST are preparing the JobShop 2009 event which will be held next week in Cluj Napoca and in other cities(Brasov, Timisoara, Bucuresti, Iasi) throughout the month of March. The main focus of this event will be to get together both companies who are looking for young talents and students looking for a job.
